Our Proud History

Background and Milestones

The 2nd Battalion of the 14th Punjab Regiment, known also as the 2/14 Punjab Regiment has a distinguished history in the British Indian Army. Before World War II, the regiment was stationed in various locations, including Jhelum, Mir Ali, Bannu, Kohat, and Dacca, where they maintained internal security and conducted training exercises. In 1940, the battalion was deployed to Hong Kong, where they played a significant role in the Battle of Hong Kong in December 1941. Despite their valiant efforts, Hong Kong fell to the Japanese, and many members, including Kartar Singh, were captured and endured severe hardships as prisoners of war until mid-1944.

To secure their release from POW hardships, some members of the 2/14 Punjab Regiment joined the Indian National Army (INA) in 1944, participating in operations in Southeast Asia. Following World War II, the battalion was reconstituted and continued to serve with distinction. The 2/14 Punjab Regiment’s contributions during the war, particularly in the defense of Hong Kong and their resilience as POWs, highlight their bravery and unwavering spirit. The legacy of the 2nd Battalion continues to inspire future generations, cementing its place in the military history of India.

At Kohat in the 1938, the Battalion was organized as follows:

‘A’ (Sikh) Company

‘B’ (Dogra) Company

‘C’ (2 platoons PMs and 1 platoon Afridi) Company

‘D’ (2 platoons Khattacks and 1 platoon Afridi) Company
